Description
Rand Water is the largest bulk water utility in Africa, supplying drinking water to municipalities, mines and industries in Gauteng and parts of Mpumalanga, the Free State and North West. Established in 1903 and headquartered in Johannesburg, it is a state-owned water board operating under South Africa's Water Services Act. Rand Water abstracts raw water mainly from the Vaal River system, which is supplemented by transfers from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, and treats it at large purification works before pumping it through an extensive network of pipelines, pump stations and reservoirs. The utility serves millions of people in metropolitan areas such as Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni. It also runs water education and conservation programmes, laboratory services and the Rand Water Foundation for community projects. Municipal clients and the public can contact Rand Water's customer service team by phone or email for enquiries.
