Description

The Volta River Authority (VRA) is Ghana's main state-owned power generation company, with its head office at Electro Volta House in Accra. It was established in 1961 to develop the hydroelectric potential of the Volta River and built the Akosombo Dam, which created Lake Volta, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. VRA later added the Kpong hydro station and a fleet of thermal power plants, including those at Aboadze near Takoradi and at Tema, and it has invested in solar power projects. Its electricity supplies Ghana's national grid and is also exported to neighbouring countries such as Togo and Benin. The authority manages communities and resources around Lake Volta and welcomes visits to its generating facilities by arrangement. Businesses and the public can contact VRA's head office by phone or reach its corporate communications team by email.
