Description

Gécamines (La Générale des Carrières et des Mines) is the state-owned mining company of the Democratic Republic of Congo, headquartered in Lubumbashi in the copper-rich Haut-Katanga province. Its history goes back to the Union Minière du Haut Katanga, founded in 1906, which was nationalised in the late 1960s and later became Gécamines. For decades it was one of Africa's largest copper producers. Today Gécamines mines and processes copper and cobalt, holds an extensive portfolio of mining titles in the Copperbelt, and is a partner in many joint ventures with international mining companies. It also manages strategic minerals trading and is involved in projects to add value to Congolese minerals locally. Gécamines plays an important role in Lubumbashi, Likasi and Kolwezi, where it has long supported housing, health and education. Partners, investors and suppliers can contact Gécamines by phone or email for enquiries.
