Kakira Sugar – Sugar Manufacturer in Jinja

Kakira Sugar Limited is Uganda's largest sugar producer, based at Kakira near Jinja in eastern Uganda. The company is part of the Madhvani Group, whose sugar business was founded by Muljibhai Madhvani in the 1930s. Kakira runs a large sugarcane estate and buys cane from thousands of out-growers in the Busoga region, processing it at a modern sugar factory into white sugar for households, food manufacturers and industrial customers. Its sugar is sold across Uganda and in regional markets. The company also generates electricity from sugarcane bagasse through cogeneration, supplying power to its operations and the national grid, and produces ethanol and other by-products. Kakira supports communities through schools, health facilities, housing and out-grower development programmes, making it a major employer in Busoga.
