Description
The National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) is the central bank of Ethiopia, headquartered in Addis Ababa. It was established in 1963, when the central banking functions of the former State Bank of Ethiopia were separated from commercial banking. The NBE is responsible for formulating and implementing monetary policy to maintain price stability, issuing the Ethiopian birr, managing foreign exchange reserves and overseeing the foreign exchange market. It licenses, regulates and supervises banks, insurance companies, microfinance institutions, capital-goods finance companies and payment system operators, and it oversees the national payment system and financial inclusion strategies. The Bank also acts as banker and fiscal agent to the government and publishes economic and financial reports and directives. It has branches in several regional cities. Financial institutions, researchers and the public can contact the National Bank of Ethiopia by phone or email for enquiries.
