Description
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is the federal agency responsible for regulating and promoting Nigeria's maritime industry. Headquartered in Apapa, Lagos, it was created in 2006 through the merger of the National Maritime Authority and the Joint Maritime Labour Industrial Council. NIMASA administers shipping and seafarers' registration, maritime labour, coastal and cabotage regulation, and the implementation of international maritime conventions. It is also responsible for maritime safety and security, search and rescue, marine pollution prevention and the Deep Blue Project, which tackles piracy and sea robbery in the Gulf of Guinea. The agency supports indigenous ship owners through the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund and runs training programmes for Nigerian seafarers. Shipping companies, seafarers, investors and the public can reach NIMASA's head office by phone or email for regulatory and general enquiries.
