Description

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) operates the railway that links the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania with Kapiri Mposhi in central Zambia. Built between 1970 and 1975 with assistance from China, the line runs for about 1,860 kilometres and was created to give landlocked Zambia an outlet to the sea. TAZARA is jointly owned by the governments of Tanzania and Zambia and has its headquarters in Dar es Salaam, with a regional office in Zambia. The railway carries freight such as copper, fertiliser, fuel, grain and general cargo, and it runs long-distance passenger trains between the two countries. The scenic journey passes through the Selous area and the southern highlands, making it popular with adventurous travellers. TAZARA has been undergoing modernisation and revitalisation plans. Shippers and passengers can contact TAZARA by phone or email for freight, ticket and general enquiries.
