Description
The Suez Canal Authority is the Egyptian state body that owns, manages and operates the Suez Canal, one of the most important shipping routes in the world. Headquartered in the Irshad Building in Ismailia, on the canal's western bank, the authority was created after the nationalisation of the canal in 1956. It handles navigation and traffic management, pilotage, tug and salvage services, ship admeasurement, transit tolls and the maintenance and dredging of the waterway, including the New Suez Canal expansion opened in 2015. The authority also runs shipyards, a maritime training institute, hospitals and other services in the canal cities of Port Said, Ismailia and Suez. Shipping lines, agents and the public can find navigation information, statistics and circulars on its website, and reach the authority by phone or email.
