Description

The Giraffe Centre is one of Nairobi's most popular attractions, a conservation and education centre in Lang'ata run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (Kenya). It was set up to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe, and its breeding programme has released more than 40 giraffes into national parks and reserves around Kenya. Today it cares for a herd of around ten Rothschild giraffes, and visitors can feed them by hand from a raised wooden platform at eye level. The site also has a nature sanctuary with walking trails and birdlife, talks on Kenyan wildlife, a tea house and the Daisy Zoovenir gift shop, which stocks crafts from dozens of local suppliers. A large part of its work is environmental education, with school groups and teachers visiting free of charge when they book a week ahead. Entry fees differ for residents and non-residents. The centre is a short drive from Karen and the Nairobi National Park, and it is open every day.
