Description
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park is a national memorial and museum in central Accra dedicated to Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president and a leading figure of African independence. It stands on the old Polo Grounds, the site where Nkrumah declared Ghana's independence in 1957. The park's centrepiece is the mausoleum where Nkrumah and his wife are buried, surrounded by reflecting pools, fountains and statues, including the famous bronze statue of Nkrumah. A museum displays photographs, personal belongings, books and documents that tell the story of his life and the independence struggle, and the landscaped gardens are a popular spot for school trips, tourists and photography. The park has been renovated with new visitor facilities and also hosts cultural events and commemorations. It is located on Atta Mills High Street. Visitors can contact the park by phone or email for opening times, tours and events.
